Music is all around us, and I love the process of understanding, creating and sharing my passion with my students! I have been playing clarinet for over 25 years and teaching private lessons for over 15! I also teach public school band and jazz band. I love helping my students improve and become better players and grow appreciation for music. I have a lot of experience preparing students for NYSSMA, All County and All Eastern festivals. My students range from beginners to advanced! My goal is to help my students grow in their understanding of how music works with their instrument while having fun!
Playing clarinet has always been a staple of my life. I started mentoring and giving private lessons to younger clarinet students in high school and continued on from there! I have traveled to students homes and worked out of my studio ever since. I like to use a good combination of technique exercises and expressive studies to give my students a well rounded education and understanding of how to perform. I always encourage preparing for NYSSMA because it creates a great goal for students to perform while learning about different composers and styles of music. I believe in musical literacy through performance and will help my students do the same!
My methods of teaching are personalized for each of my students depending on age, experience and interests. Once I determine their level, I then introduce some method books, technique exercises and etudes. Combining these create a full spectrum of rhythm, dynamics, intonation, form, meter, expression and much more! I continuously assess my students progress and create short and long term goals to set us up for success! Lessons along with student homework will ensure my students begin to love and appreciate their instruments and the repertoire!
I work together with my students to create realistic goals for growth and success. I believe in having high expectations for my students because I love seeing growing passion and love for something that is so important to me! I also make it a priority to create a safe space for my students to be able to communicate with me about goals and material. I make sure to try and get to know my students in order to help them grow as much I possibly can, to understand how each individual learns so I can create specific and individualized programs!
I had the pleasure of being Kate’s private clarinet teacher throughout her high school years. She was as hard working and determined as any student I had taught over a 34 year teaching career. While my student, Kate was trained with French conservatory style methods and studied and performed large amount of classic clarinet repertoire. Kate received received many honors and awards while my student and whole heartedly endorse her for private and public school teaching. She is a wonderful, caring and compassionate teacher with a high skill set for teaching students of all ages and levels.
