2013 concerto competition winner Simpson College
2015 Des Moines Women's Club Scholarship Recipient
I started playing the alto saxophone in 5th grade and immediately fell in love with making music and sharing it with others. . I love to perform in concert bands, jazz bands, saxophone quartets, small chamber groups, and as a soloist. I currently play with the Mount Vernon Community Band, Cedar Rapids Municipal Band, and have been a guest soloist with a local high school choir. In college I studied classical and jazz saxophone, and also took applied lessons in flute, clarinet, and piano. I can play alto, tenor, soprano, and bari saxophones.
I have been teaching woodwind music lessons since I was a music education student at Simpson College starting in 2010. I graduated in 2015 with a bachelor's in music education and I am currently a full time band teacher. This is my 6th year teaching band and I am currently the 5-12 band director for North Linn Community Schools. I regularly instruct large group rehearsals and lessons for my job. I love starting beginner musicians and seeing the progress they make in such a short amount of time. I have experience teaching all instruments in a concert band, but I enjoy teaching and performing on woodwinds the most.
This will depend on the level of the student and if they are in a band program in a school currently. I want to teach lessons as a supplement to what a student is learning in school, so I will work with the music and method book they already have. If the student is not in a band program, I would recommend starting with the Essential Elements band method. We will start with reading music, basic tone production, and good practice skills. I will always tailor the lessons to meet the needs and goals of the student.
Relationship building is very important to me as a teacher. I always get to know my students to help find the best way for this them to learn. I am a patient person but I like to encourage students to always use their best effort. I set clear and realistic goals for students to work towards every week as well as bigger long term goals, such as a song they want to learn to play for an event. My goal is for my students to enjoy the hard work it takes to reach a goal and make an accomplishment they can be proud of.
Ms. M was my private saxophone teacher when I was in high school. She helped me get a better tone and prepare music for my school contests and performances. She is a very nice and knowledgeable teacher.
Katelyn is a very kind, patient, and knowledgeable teacher.
Katelyn made lessons fun every single time, but always made sure to keep my daughter on focus with her goals. She really focused on technique and helped my daughter progress a lot!
I work with Ms. Katelyn as a music educator. She is very knowledgeable in music as well as how to teach young people. She is very patient and kind and is a great teacher.
