I am a classically trained vocalist, but my true calling is music education. Raised in a very musical family full of teachers, I was singing before I was talking and I started taking piano lessons at the age of 6. I hold a bachelor's degree in Vocal Music Education from the University of Tulsa and I have served as a choir director, taught general music, choral ensembles, fine arts, and musical theatre, and have several years of private voice and piano teaching experience. With 15 years of performance experience, I have sang with the Richmond Symphony Chorus, the Tulsa Chorale led by Dr. Tim Sharp, the TU Cappella Chamber Singers and TU Chorale led by Dr. Kim Childs, and the Chancel Choir of the First Presbyterian Church of Tulsa led by Ron Pearson. Additionally, I have performed in concerts in coordination with renowned performers and conductors, such as Eric Whitacre, James Bagwell, and Anthony Parnther. I most recently sang Faure's Requiem at Carnegie Hall under the direction of Dr. Erin Freeman. When not teaching music, I can be found traveling, reading, practicing yoga, hiking, playing ukulele
I realized my true passion was centered around teaching music when I began teaching private piano lessons in high school. By creating a highly inclusive learning environment, where students with a range of abilities and learning styles feel comfortable and confident taking risks, I enable them to perform both beautifully and technically. I believe that each person has the possibility of transforming and developing as musicians - regardless of their starting point. One of my favorite parts about teaching private music lessons is helping students reach their musical goals, whether that's gaining musical confidence, achieving sightreading proficiency, preparing for upcoming concerts, recitals, exams, and auditions for university scholarships, choirs, select ensembles, show choirs, and musicals, as well as composing their own music.
I love tailoring each lesson to each individual student I teach. It is important to me that my students are interested in the material that they are learning. I enjoy helping my students reach their musical goals by selecting repertoires that appeal to them while also helping to address and resolve their technical deficiencies. For my beginning piano students, I typically start with Faber's Piano Adventures. For young singers, I use the Kodaly Method as a way of developing musical skills and teaching musical concepts. I have enjoyed working with private music students ages 3-85 years old, and no matter the age, I try to build a relationship with each student so that I can be a better facilitator of their learning.
My approach to teaching is holistic, drawing on a strong background in vocal pedagogy and music education. Teaching voice, piano, and other music related lessons is a position I honor, balancing the technical, musical, and personal goals of each student and making assessments of what to address first. As the vocal instrument is one that matures at different rates for each student, I encourage all of my students to celebrate and grow at the pace that is best for their development. Choosing appropriate repertoire that appeals to the students and helps to address technical deficiencies, as well as showcases their natural gifts, is of utmost importance. Highest on my list of teaching goals is to create a highly inclusive learning environment, where students with a range of abilities, across intersecting social identities, feel at home in the space. To sing powerfully and technically well, from the heart and spirit, requires incredible vulnerability, and I am mindful of the different learning styles and range of vocal abilities. I believe that each student has the possibility of transforming and developing as musicians.
