I have a passion for sharing her love of music with others and am dedicated to educational success. I have completed my associate of science degree at Kishwaukee College, and was a part of the Performing Arts Club and studied keyboard, voice, and guitar. Currently, I am pursuing my bachelor's degree in music education at NIU and am double majoring in clarinet performance with Gregory Barrett. I am a highly motivated individual, eager to contribute to team success through hard work. I love developing relationships with students and encourage dedication to practice and improvement over time.
The first band I have been in was when I was twelve years old, playing clarinet in my local bandshell. I have performed in a large variety of settings including the NIU Wind Symphony, NIU Wind Ensemble, NIU Chamber Group, NIU Huskie Marching Band, and NIU Sinfonia. I also played clarinet with the Kishwaukee Concert Band, DeKalb Municipal Bandshell, and was principal clarinetist and ringer of the Illinois Valley Youth Symphony Orchestra. I am currently hired as the Esmond United Methodist Church pianist, and has been a music provider for the Rochelle United Methodist Church in their handbell choir, singing choir, and played violin and clarinet in small ensembles during church services. I am a previous teacher's assistant for band, choir, and strings classes in the Greater Rochelle Area Christian Education School and served as the camp counselor and clarinet sectional leader in the Maranatha Baptist College Band Camp. Currently I teach private lessons and perform in local bands and churches.
Educators must be well educated, and they also must know how to educate others. Being very attentive to the needs of students through observation is a skill that can be used later from observing every person you interact with to get better at reading how students feel. Interactions with people even outside of professional settings is a learning experience. Taking time to make someone smile is a new way to help someone's day be a little brighter. Studying people and giving them what you perceive they need is a good exercise for teaching practice. It is important to communicate well as a music educator.
Communicating well as a music educator is vital for success; it is the way you communicate that reaches the students. Not every student that is in a classroom is the same; each one is unique and has their own special needs. To reach some students, it can sometimes mean trying a different kind of communication that you do not usually use. Being firmly rooted in my personal practice and purpose helps students find theirs as well. Taking time to re-set the mind helps students remember the meaning and power that music holds. Slowing down the mind and thinking more clearly about what you are doing is the key to being an effective musician and making both long term and short term goals.
