I have studied piano for many years, including at the college level, but my degrees are in psychology and communications. I am a former writer and producer for CNN.
I have a B.A. degree in Psychology and an M.Ed. in Instructional Media. I have also studied International Business and Political Science courses at Georgia State University on post-baccalaureate, non degree status.
Overview:
I love music and have studied piano since I was six years old. I also studied organ and clarinet briefly. My degrees are in Psychology and Communications. I worked for state and federal government agencies and was a writer and producer for CNN/Atlanta for ten years. I enjoy teaching piano and now have six students ranging in age from 4 to 36 years of age. I also enjoy tennis and am a former law student, but found the latter not to my liking.
I prefer my range to be in Vinings, Chastain Park, and Buckhead, but will consider teaching outside these areas.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching piano to students age 4 to 60 for five years. I enjoy not only teaching the rules and techniques of piano performance; I also try to impart a love of music and to make students realize that it adds a wonderful dimension to their lives that carries over to many other areas. One of my Ga. Tech/Atlanta students connects with his grandmother in France via Skype and plays for her. She misses him and enjoys it immensely. I believe my students and their parents are pleased and I would be happy to give references.
METHODS USED
The method I begin with depends on what the student responds to best. I first try to show them how enjoyable music is and how they can share it with family members and friends, including popular and holiday music and songs they may sing at church. Some students even like simplified jazz. I start holiday music in October and enjoy knowing how much their parents enjoy hearing and singing it. I like to use the Bastien instructional books which introduce simplified versions of music types from many cultures, including calypso, spirituals, and classical. Then we move to what I call "real" music, meaning simplified versions of minuets, waltzes, Mozart sonatas, operatic excerpts and symphonies. I use my smartphone to play the bigger symphonies, shows, etc. from which their lessons are constructed, even including Harry Potter on Broadway.
LESSON STYLE
I use books recommended to me by the music stores, Opus Winds in Decatur, Ga. I also consult with other music teachers at times and shop for music that my students tell me they would like to learn. I also tell them they can shop at musicnotes.com and I will help them learn to play pieces they like. There is something to be learned from the way any genre of music is composed. When they know it's okay to play something from Harry Potter, for example, it is much easier to transfer their focus to the classic instructional materials
I am flexible regarding the schedule that accommodates my students' other activities.
