I love teaching voice! I see singing as a full body experience with a free and easy technique. I love to make singers into better versions of themselves and better artists. I am a strong believer in the fact that singing should always be done out of love and fun in the persuit of excellence. I am a graduate from the University of Toronto and the Juilliard School. I have an undergraduate, masters and artist diploma from the above schools. Beyond that I have 10 years of performance experience in Europe, Asia, USA and Canada. I see teaching singing as a way of comunicating and know that not all teachers speak the language that you understand. I would love to work with you and see if we can learn from each other!
I have been teaching voice on and off for the last 15 years. I have always enjoyed the process. More recently I have had the pleasure of conducting several masterclasses in China, where I was made an honourary professor, University of Toronto and Gordon College in Massachusetts. I have been singing professionally for 10 years in places like the Met and the Canadian Opera Company. I have also had the pleasure of working at the English National Opera and the Bordeaux opera Company. So along with teaching experience, I bring real life performance experience.
I am a big believer in the breath. For a beginner I do a lot of exercises with breath connection to encourage healthy, connected singing. I like the idea that the voice dances on the breath and is buoyed and protected by that technique. I am also a very physical teacher, encouraging students to use their whole body in the act of singing. The voice is carried by the whole body and not just the muscles that are the vocal chords. Other than that I like to asses each person as they come and see what works for them. We are all built physically differently and so we sing differently and learn differently.
So I feel like I am going to be repeating myself but here we go :). I really love singing and i believe that all people should sing. The voice is a muscle and so can be trained to improve like any other muscle in the body. Whether you are singing for fun or singing for a profession or singing in an armature choir you can become a better version of your self. I find it super exciting to help people reach new sides of themselves. For younger students there is so much to be learned from the practice of voice lessons and the process of learning.
