My Master’s Degree -Flute Performance is from The University of Michigan where I studied with Leone Buyse as a full scholarship student. While in Michigan, I had a large studio of private students in many local high schools. I taught at college music preparatories and privately while in Cleveland, Ohio where I studied with piccoloist William Hebert at Baldwin Wallace College Conservatory of Music, also under scholarship. My Bachelor’s Degree in Flute Performance was achieved at The Peabody Institute of Music where I studied with Mark Sparks. Some of my international experience includes performing as a concerto soloist, recitals, orchestral musician and teaching master classes in China, Central and South America, Europe, Mexico and the USA. I have been the head of the flute department at and head of the wind department at the conservatory level. Recently I was the principal flutist in a professional chamber orchestra for many years and currently I am teaching. As much of my professional career has been in Latin America, I am bilingual. I have taught students ranging from ages six to sixty and from beginner to professional levels. Throughout my career, I have remained in contact with students, a large portion whom have found employment in music. While building my own career, I have cultivated relationships with colleagues internationally, which could be an attribute to help international as well as local students. I look forward to teaching you soon either at my studio or online. In certain cases I may teach in student's home if agreed upon.
"Extraordinary performance by Katherine C....; We look forward to having more opportunities to listen to her... " Caribbean Times Newspaper “Katherine C., …captivated the audience this evening with such lovely sweetness that whomever saw her on this occasion will never forget it for the rest of their life…” Audience member, Mr Gonzalez in Editorial of The Herald Newspaper “…she (Katherine C.) is probably the most outstanding flutist I have been privileged to work with throughout my professional career on four continents. The discipline of her thorough training is obvious…” Orchestra director Gary Gardner. I am honored to have had to opportunity to perform for many audiences throughout my musical career. My Bachelor of Music Degree in Flute Performance was achieved at the prestigious Peabody Institute of Music of Johns Hopkins University- historically, America’s first music conservatory and my Master of Music Degree, also in Flute Performance, was achieved at The University of Michigan where I studied as a full talent scholarship student. Additionally, I have taken master classes with principal flutists of the majority of the orchestras worldwide, as well as with the renown flutist Sir James Galway. My experience ranges from performing in Carnegie Hall to giving concerts throughout Europe, The Caribbean, Central & South America, Mexico, Asia and in the US. My development of the tone on the flute has allowed me to win many music competitions including in New York & Washington D.C from a variety of organizations, including The Rotary Club. I am always happy to share her my flute music as a Concerto Soloist, Recitalist, Orchestral Flutist, Church Musician, Recording Artist or Special Event Musician and I would love to teach you to do the same at any level whether professional or just for a fun hobby! A native of Cleveland, Ohio, this award-winning flutist is now scheduling performances both locally and internationally. Albums available are: "Silent Night" - classical flute and guitar; "Canyon Echo"- works for solo flute recorded in Namurachi with the acoustics and natural sounds of the canyon, and “Flute Fantasia” -favorite traditional standards with flute and synthesizer.
For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. I usually mix all lessons with a variety of a musical exercise, an etude, and then a larger solo piece.
Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. While I try to encourage students to practice at home, I realize there are time limits and it's not always possible . However, there is plenty to learn about music and enjoy it right at the class regardless of how much time can be spent at home practicing or not.
