Overview:
I have been playing music an instrument for about 23 years now. I started when I was 4 on piano and later picked up clarinet at 10, and going on to learn most of the band instruments along the way. I pursued clarinet performance in college and was principal of the orchestra for the last two years. I currently work full time as a 1st grade teacher as well as perform in various ensembles in the Sacramento area. I also currently mentor and play principal in the American River College Orchestra. I love playing clarinet and piano on a regular basis and love teaching what I love doing to others.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching piano and clarinet while I was in high school. I currently teach 1st grade in the Fairfield area as well as have a few private students. My students have been selected for county honor bands, all northern honor bands, all state honor bands and even all national honor bands. I encourage regular practice and always find music that peaks their interests and makes them want to practice while also working on foundational skills. My students are always motivated to want to perform better and it’s my goal to help them feel accomplished.
METHODS USED
For beginning students, I like to use either standard of excellence or essential elements. I also pull from my own personal library or will ask to provide materials based on the students needs. Lessons are structured with some type of warm up, a technique and solo performance, as well as practicing skills on sight reading. This is good for both adults and kids. I also like to set goals at each lesson and have a time frame of what the expectations are for the following lesson. Lessons are fun and engaging, no matter their ability level.
LESSON STYLE
I always make things work in a lesson, so if your child didn’t get a chance to practice the week leading up to the lesson, I work around that. I base the lesson and the student and what they feel like they need to work on. At every lesson, we both set goals of what skill they want to accomplish and the time frame they want to accomplish it in. Of course, not everything that is needed to learn is exciting, but I like to balance the lesson and the practicing with both technique and fun. I tailor the lesson to every student.
