Hello! My name is Kathleen, and I am a working professional singer and passionate piano and voice teacher with 8 years of teaching experience. I have sung in choirs and performed in Musical Theatre throughout my life. Some of my favorite past roles include Fiona in Shrek! The Musical, Cinderella in Roger's and Hammerstein's Cinderella, and Maria in the Sound of Music. I graduated from California State University Long Beach in 2019 with a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance, where I also studied Opera and Vocal Jazz. I have travelled across Europe as a choir member and soloist and have had the opportunity to compete and perform in some of the most beautiful places in the world, including St. Peter's Basilica in Rome and St. Paul's Cathedral in London. I currently work as a cantor at a local church, and enjoy performing with choirs in the OC and LA areas.
I began my teaching career as a college student in 2015 and have continued to teach both in private and group settings for a total of 8 years. My primary instrument is voice, and I am passionate about guiding growing singers in finding their voice, developing healthy vocal technique, learning helpful music theory, and fostering a love of music! I also teach piano up to an intermediate level and enjoy helping players advance their agility, understanding of theory, and musical expression. In both voice and piano lessons, I love finding repertoire that makes each student excited to learn and perform, and welcome students of all ages!
In both piano and voice lessons, I find that a mix of classical and modern repertoire encourages the ideal balance of skill development and enjoyment! For beginning piano students, I begin by assigning Bastien's Piano Books; for children, I usually start with the Basics Primer, and for adults the Piano for Adults. Once the student has developed a foundation of the essentials, I assign repertoire tailored to their musical goals, ability, and interests. For students with previous piano experience, I first assess knowledge and ability in order to assign the proper level of either Bastien's Piano Basics or other solo repertoire. For voice students, I conduct an assessment of their individual range and skills in order to find classical or musical theatre repertoire that encourages development of proper vocal technique. I also work with each student to find modern music that they love and will help target their specific singing goals. Training in a variety of genres is central to my teaching philosophy so that students can explore new music, build a versatile singing technique, and have fun!
I know I'm doing my job when my student is growing not only in their abilities, but in their love of music! Ensuring that each student is learning repertoire that they enjoy at a pace that suits them is central to my teaching style. I love to find each student's strengths and celebrate them, as well as targeting goals for improvement in a warm, safe setting. I believe that music is meant to bring joy and healing to people, whether you are listening to it or making it. This means that music lessons should be fun!
