Hello! My name is Kathryn and I am currently a Senior at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire studying Vocal Performance. I have been taking private voice lessons for 5 years of my own, and will be graduating this coming Fall 2020 with a Bachelor's Degree in Vocal Performance. Shortly thereafter, I'm attending Graduate School to pursue a Master's Degree in Vocal Performance. Though I am a Classically-trained vocalist, I love to teach Musical Theatre, Classical and Opera; as I'm fluid in all three genres enough to teach them all confidently. I also have 14 years of private piano experience, so I am proficient in being able to lead healthy, efficient warmups, as well as accompanying my students when a piece is practiced/ready enough to perform the whole way through. I look forward to hearing from some of you in the future!
My teaching experience started my freshman year of college, with one girl who was working with me on a Community Theatre production, and her mother wanted me to start teaching her some voice lessons. Since then, I've had enough interest from other local students that I've been able to open up my own voice studio, and have rented out a private studio space for the past 2 Summers I've been home from College. Speaking from my personal experience with lessons, I have always had positive, encouraging, yet critical teachers. In other words, I love to provide a fun, modern, easy energy to my studio, but hold my students accountable to practice their repertoire on their own time, come prepared and ready to sing and make progress at each lesson, while still connecting with them and treating them like a person and building that personal connection as well, that I believe is so vital in maintaining a relationship that goes beyond the doors of a studio or practice room.
Throughout the course of my collegiate career, the main method/approach to singing that I have been taught and teach to my own students as well, is that of relying on proper air/breath support to do the "heavy lifting" in singing- NOT putting any stress or tension on your vocal chords! Therefore, my methods/practices consist largely of proper breathing exercises during warmups, but also selecting solo repertoire that focuses on building proper and healthy bridges between your chest/head voice, as to create a smoother, less-noticeable transition that also sustains your voice throughout the course of your singing career.
First and foremost, the main end goal for me with every single one of my students in my studio is attempting to develop the same love and passion for music that I have been so lucky to develop through having enthusiastic, knowledgeable, talented instructors as well. While I would love to see some of my students pursue a degree/career in music past a few years into high school, I realize that that is a tough calling to follow, and many times people sing or perform more as a hobby than a career choice. Myself being younger (22), my teaching style revolves much around the personality and comfortability factor of each individual student. Since not each student is the same, it's important for me to be flexible as the teacher in providing as encouraging, enthusiastic, and comfortable of a lesson environment as possible, while still holding a high standard of progress and learning at the same time!
