Overview:
I am thrilled to have been teaching private voice for over five years. First and foremost I focus on vocal health, striving to meet each studentxe2x80x99s individual goals and interests with a solid foundational technique. In addition to teaching privately, I am also currently conducting the Westminster Singers choir and focusing on sharing the joy of singing with music lovers from all walks of life. I have performed with local opera companies such as Gateway Opera and Winter Opera St. Louis, as well as Washington University and Southern Illinois University Edwardsvillexe2x80x99s opera programs. Some of her favorite roles include Mother in Amahl and the Night Visitors and Suor Genovieffa in Suor Angelica. -
EXPERIENCE
I've been teaching private lessons for about 5 years, beginning during my undergrad studies. It has been extremely rewarding to have the opportunity to share my knowledge about healthy singing and making music with others. I have experience with a range of ages and voice types, and am trained in vocal pedagogy. As my students have been interested in many different musical styles, I have been able to apply my knowledge across genres. I have found that no matter the style, a foundational technique for a strong and healthy voice is incredibly valuable.
METHODS USED
As every voice is unique, it is important to me that the lessons I give are personalized for each student. It is always my goal to unlock the singer's true, natural voice, so that they can create their own personal sound. I use a functional bel canto method that focuses on a natural expression of the voice and an active breath and resonance. This ensures a healthy sound production, avoiding undue pressure on the vocal folds. The greatest aspect of this technique is that it translates to any musical style and provides a solid foundation that can be taken in any direction.
LESSON STYLE
As a voice teacher, I have greatly enjoyed sharing the gift of music with others. It is important to me that singers always find joy and fulfillment in making music. I work with each singer to choose repertoire that is interesting and enjoyable to work on, and that will allow them to grow musically. We set goals from week to week that will encourage home practice as well, since just like any other skill, learning to perform musically takes time and dedication. A trained singer relies on muscle memory and a balanced resonance, so I aim to shift my students' awareness from how things sound to how they feel. After all, who hasn't been shocked by the unfamiliar sound of a recording of their own voice? Learning to use more of the senses creates a much more healthy and present singing technique.
