Teacher of the Month- April, Hillsborough Academy of Math and Science
I am a music educator located in the Tampa, FL area who loves to share my passion for music with students. I graduated from the University of South Carolina with a degree in instrumental music education and a focus on clarinet. Throughout college I loved giving lessons to middle school and high school students. I teach middle school band but I love teaching students of all ages. Along with teaching music, I also really enjoy teaching colorguard and marching band. I am so excited to have an outlet to continue my teaching.
I have always been a natural teacher and enjoy sharing my knowledge with others. As a high school student, I enjoyed mentoring other students in the band. This led to my interest in being a music education major in college where I gave lessons and taught marching band for 3 years. Now, as a middle school band director I am able to teach students every single day. I start students on a range of instruments and guide them through middle school as their director. I teach not only musical skills, but organization and character building.
Every lesson that I teach is focused on the student's individual needs and skills. For beginning students, I like to start with a method book such as Essential Elements. For students with moderate experience and advanced students I find it helpful to work on repertoire that interests the students. This could be music that the student is working on in class or music that I find for students to work on. I also like for students to perform music that they are working on for their family and friends.
It is important to me that students enjoy their lessons and the process of working on a piece of music. This starts with a good rapport between student and teacher. I also believe that a successful musician needs a strong technical base. This includes scales, long tones, and chorales, Lessons will always begin the basics and then move on to music and repertoire. Lessons will be paced to keep students engaged. Students will be expected to practice throughout the week so that they can be prepared for lessons
