I’m a passionate and motivated teacher who loves working with students and sharing my love of music. I started playing the cello when I was 6 years old but switched to viola in the fifth grade. I graduated from the University of North Texas with a Bachelors Degree in music with a concentration in viola and education. In college I played in the viola section of the UNT orchestra and also with the New Philharmonic Orchestra of Irving. I currently play in the viola section of the Austin Philharmonic.
My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private violin and viola lessons part time ten years ago. I teach students in my home but also don’t mind coming to them as this can be more convenient for busy schedules! I teach beginner to intermediate levels for violin and all levels beginner to advanced for viola. I love to combine classical and modern music when teaching students. I find it helps the student have fun and feel motivated to practice! I’m always looking to bring on new students of all ages!
For beginning students who are children, I usually start with Leonard’s Essential Elements. Once my student understands the fundamentals I will begin to introduce scales, etudes, and solo pieces that are appropriate for their level. I also love to throw in a “fun piece” (a favorite song or something from the radio) at the end of my lessons. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in and focus on those areas. I let my students interests and abilities guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun!
It’s very important to me that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I want all of my students to be successful and develop a passion for music! I always want my students to feel comfortable so I play along with my students to help build confidence. I always acknowledge the hard work they are doing and set realistic expectations for practice and performance! The more motivated and inspired my students are the more they will want to practice! By trying to find out what inspires the students, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs.
