Overview:
I am a flute/piccolo player in the DC area with experience teaching private lessons, group lessons and coaching small ensembles as well as extensive performance experience with various orchestras and chamber groups. I have spent summers at various music festivals, from the Monteux School in Maine to the American Institute of Musical Studies in Austria. I currently sub with Harrisburg and Lancaster Symphonies (PA) and freelance in and around Philadelphia and DC. In addition to orchestral playing, I have played many musicals, operas, and have participated in the Philadelphia Fringe Festival several times. Recently I began playing with Arcana, a Philadelphia based ensemble dedicated to new and avant garde music.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching privately for over ten years. I have taught all levels and ages over the years, including a few adults. During my five years at Play On Philly, an after school music program, I taught small group flute lessons and coached/arranged music for small chamber groups. I have also worked for Symphony in C Youth Orchestra, coaching weekly sectionals and playing in the orchestra with students. As part of the woodwind quintet Federal Winds, I have done educational outreach concerts as well as performed at unique venues around Philadelphia.
METHODS USED
When it comes to teaching, I like to tailor each lesson to what the student needs, and that may be slightly different for each person. I find duets are a great way to get better at sight reading and improving tuning, so I usually bring a level appropriate duet or two to each lesson. Scales, basic music theory and even some music history are all part of lessons, in addition to other repertoire to develop tone, technique, and musicianship. If a student really wants to learn a specific song, I am happy to incorporate that into the lessons too!
LESSON STYLE
Lessons are challenging yet fun. As students improve their skills, I find they usually enjoy playing even more than when they started. I try to find ways to make scales and tone exercises more interesting so students are more likely to incorporate these things into their daily practice. It is also important to choose repertoire that is the right level of difficulty so students are not bored or frustrated. When a student is struggling with a new concept or a difficult technical challenge, I can offer them many different ways to identify and then practice the issue.
