I have been teaching, performing and repairing guitars and basses for the last 20 years. I have been on tour with national acts. I have shared the stage with Gretchen Wilson, Dierks Bently, Josh Thompson and many more including rock legends Night Ranger. I have met Black Sabbath, Faster Pussycat and many more. I have had the wonderful experience of performing in front of 30,000 people and also being on TV.
I started teaching in High School. I then went away to music school and then started teaching and repairing guitars in my home town at the local music store. Since then I've taught in Texas and Iowa and am now back in Texas.
I start out with Mel Bay Book 1 (the blue book). I also hand write out finger exercises, scales and songs in a book of blank mansuscript paper. After the student has completed book 1 of Mel Bay, I then move them to Berklee Book 1 and continue to teach them songs and music theory.
Although I and most guitar instructors feel that students should start on an acoustic guitar (the reason is proper right and left hand position) I do not turn electric guitar students away and am able to work well with them. Most students want to "Rock Out" and I do guide them in that direction or whatever direction the student or parent requests. I find that learning the style of music the student is interested in keeps them interested in learning the guitar. Some students might want to learn "Sweet Home Alabama" while others might want to learn "Crazy Train" others might want to learn "Tears In Heaven" and I take the student in the direction they want. (If the student is a child I will do so only with the parent's permission)
