I grew up being forced into piano lessons at the ripe age of five. My mother insisted and I rejected it. However, I had no choice in the matter. She wanted me to play the piano. So I learned. Once I started middle school, I joined the choir because I noticed that they were going on a lot of field trips. Little did I know that I would actually fall in love with singing. I kept singing all the way up to my senior year and then decided that I wanted to pursue a degree in Music Education; however, after receiving weeks of private training, I found my true singing voice. My passion began to grow, and because of my constant dedication to this craft, I earned my masters degree and I am currently enjoying a pre-professional career as an opera singer.
My enthusiasm for performance and teaching have turned me into an energetic and motivated instructor of voice and piano for the past three years. I began teaching privately while in graduate school at the University of Maryland. During my time there, I enjoyed made performance opportunities in the DC Metro area. This allowed me to get a sense of what good, young voices sound like at the beginnings of their careers. My main goal for students who join my studio is for them to have fun! That is the heart of music making. I cater my lessons to my students needs and wants. I want to be there to help you reach all of your goals, whether they be singing at a wedding or having an illustrious performing career.
Both piano and voice students are required to become familiar with basic music theory. No worries if you are not proficient! We will get you there within the first few lessons. For piano students, I will start them with basic scales and the Hanon exercises. After the student masters a few of the beginning exercises, we will slowly begin to add repertoire that solidifies proper technique. I tend to only work with beginning piano students, as it is not my primary instrument. Students will be encouraged to bring in pieces that they are interested in learning. For voice students, I will require them to not only learn theory, but they will be required to study piano for a short period of their lesson. This is meant to help boost their understanding of musicality, theory, and aural training. We will also begin with simple vocalizes that are catered to their style of singing. If they are preparing for an audition or role, we will slowly, but effectively incorporate proper/healthy technique into their repertoire. Once a certain level of mastery is achieved, I will begin to assign repertoire to help encourage the solidification of technique. Students will be encouraged to bring in pieces that they are interested in learning.
All students learn at their own pace. I will spend a lot of time getting to know the student as a learner and as a human so that I can be of better service to them. I love having my students keep a journal of their lessons so that they may catalogue their progress as they have more and more lesson. I believe in setting realistic goals and unattainable goals simultaneously. I say this because as we achieve the realistic goals, we get closer and closer to those goals that once seemed unattainable. I believe it helps keep both me and the student motivated to continue to be and do the very best.
