I've been teaching music in many different capacities for eight years now. Most recently, I served as the music instructor/curriculum designer for Manhattan Youth at The Computer School. Privately, I've taught students of all ages and experience levels, with focuses on saxophone sound, technique, music theory, aural skills, reading music, and improvisation. My performance experience includes classical clarinet and saxophone repertoire, jazz, klezmer, funk, rock, r&b, country, pop, disco, latin, and folk music, allowing me to relate to students from a broad range of interests and experience levels.
My main priority as an educator is to keep music fun and enjoyable while you progress on a path towards mastery of an instrument. Music is an art and a discipline, but it's purpose has always been to provide entertainment, share feelings, incite dance, and accompany celebration. To retain that passion for music while you learn, the focus has to always be on sound, not concepts. You should hear yourself often, be able to hear your improvement, and be able to point towards a tangible goal for your playing. Many paths and methods focus so narrowly on reading music and the technique of the saxophone that the student's ears becomes detached from what they are doing with their body. My practicing techniques make sure that won't happen.
Every lesson starts with listening. Whether it be to yourself, someone you want to sound like, or your favorite band, the best way to focus your efforts while learning is to know who you want to sound like and what kind of music you want to make. From there, everything else falls into place. There's no use spending long hours practicing techniques and exercises and scale patterns if it's not serving the purpose of helping you achieve your goals and if it's not helping you have fun playing music. Every professional I know achieved that dream by spending their practice focused on what they love about music, and that's what I'm here to help you do. Studying with me, you'll learn how to play your favorite solos, develop a beautiful sound, and play along with your favorite bands or ensembles.
