1st Place Award for Musical Theatre Category at National Association for Teachers of Singing
Broadway World Award winner for Best Actress in a Musical
Academic Scholarship, Kansas State University
My voice and piano studio was established in the summer of 2018 with the desire to provide quality piano and musical theatre coaching/training to the Kansas City area. Growing up, musical theatre and piano lessons were an essential outlet for me as I explored the world around me and within me. I teach because of my desire to share the life-changing experiences the performing arts has to offer with the next generation of performers. I am a professional musical theatre performer and director based in Kansas City and I received a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance in December 2018 from Kansas State University. I am currently teaching theatre at Providence School of Arts and I have been teaching private lessons since 2017. I have previously music directed and choreographed for both Stage Right Performing Arts and Christian Youth Theatre Kansas City and looks forward to teaching and growing the rising stars of musical theatre in Kansas City.
I graduated from Kansas State University in 2018 with a Bachelor's Degree in Vocal Performance and a minor in Theatre. Over the past 5 years I have had 7 beginner piano students and 10 voice students of varying levels. I have taught ages 5-10 for piano and 11-20 for voice. I currently teach online via FaceTime/Zoom, am available to go to students homes or host them in my studio. I love teaching the next generation of musicians to find their voice and confidence in their instrument so that they can share their gifts with others and edify themselves.
.I believe that an understanding of music theory and learning to read music is the foundation of success for both my piano and voice students which is why I typically require my voice students to be taking piano simultaneously with voice. For beginning piano students, I will typically begin with the James Bastien Primer/Level 1 Series with the focus split equally between theory and technique. I require students to fill out a practice log monthly to ensure that they are maintaining the knowledge and skills they learn in lessons and so that parents can be involved in their progress. I believe that practice is the most essential part of learning piano and so many lessons are spent teaching effective practicing techniques that will prevent disinterest or burnout from making music. While my teaching style is relaxed, I expect each student to always be doing their very best. I desire to work with the parent and student to create a curriculum and set of goals for the student based on their individual skill set and work ethic. Once the student progresses enough to read simple melodies on their own, we move in to solo performance repertoire.
I desire for the student to learn as much about themselves as they do their instrument. I believe that piano and voice are conduits for expression of emotion and thought and are extremely beneficial in helping students find confidence and awareness. My main motto is that EVERYONE can make music and so I encourage all types of people to learn at my studio. Music and performance as a profession will only last if the student has passion for it so I try to encourage each student to discover why they want to pursue music throughout lessons. Even if my students do not become professionals, I want to develop discipline, empathy, creativity and love through making music that they can use everyday for the rest of their lives, no matter what their profession.
Kelly is amazing! My daughter started lessons with her just a few months ago and we have seen huge growth not only in her vocal skills but her acting, performance skills as well. Kelly takes time to help her students understand how their voice works and how to properly sing, strengthen and grow. My daughter loves her lessons with Kelly, she says “My time with Kelly is more that just voice lessons, she helps my confidence, she is uplifting and positive and has even helped me through rough times after auditions to not get down on myself but instead to focus on what I did well and what I can do better to improve my skills.” We highly recommend Kelly. She is a true professional who also performs so she is actually practicing what she teaches. Can’t say enough good things about her!
Professional & fun! I'm so thrilled we were able to find voice lessons from such a pro given that we live in a rural area. My daughter looks forward to her lesson each week, and I look forward to her being excited about it.
She is a very good teacher. She will make sure to adapt her lessons to help you the best you can. She makes sure that you understand what she is telling you and is very good at explaining. She knows exaclty what to do to help you reach your goals.
