I am primarily a percussionist, with over 10 years of expierience playing and performing in jazz bands, marching bands, musical theatre, small ensembles, wind ensembles, and symphonies, and I was the principle percussionist for 2 years while I was in college. I also have 5 years of expierience on the trumpet, 15 years of guitar, as well as expierience with many other instruments. I love to perform as well as teach, and I believe that classical and contemporary do not have to be at odds, and I work hard to incorporate both into my own performances as well as when I teach.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching for four years in many capacities, from teaching full bands, to working one on one with students of all ages. I have taught many older students who have a strong foundation in music, as well as young students with no music expierience at all. I have competed in competitions and been a featured soloist, and my love for music challenges me to be the best teacher I can be. All students deserve the opportunity to be involved in music, and with my expierience, I can help them find the type of music they enjoy.
METHODS USED
No matter where the student starts from, I always spend a significant amount of time in the first lesson discussing with them what they want to gain, what they are interested in, and how much time and effort they want to put into this endevor. It is important to me to understand the student so that I can cater to their needs and desires, and hopefully encourage them to continue playing music. From there, we will evaluate which books, songs, and styles to teach so that the student will get the most out of each lesson.
LESSON STYLE
Each and every student will respond differently to instruction, and I am proud to say that I am extremely adaptable. I want to make sure that I am communicating with each individual in a way that they will understand and be successful with, because the student is the most important variable. I use a wide variety of pop culture, classical influence, and I make sure to provide my students with opportunities to challenge themselves and grow in many ways, including encouraging them to participate in live performaces, competitions, and composition.
