Earshot Jazz golden ear award
I have been an educator and performer in the Seattle area for over 20 years I enjoy working with beginners as well as more advanced students.I am a very patient teacher who both likes to challenge students but puts a priority on having fun and loving music.I also have been performing in the Northwest for over 30 years.I have been a member and co-founder of jazz, blues, reggae, experimental, and world music bands.I have performed at many venues and festivals around the Northwest including: Earshot jazz festival,Bumbershoot, Folklife, New Works for Saxophone, and many others.
I have been a martial arts instructor and basketball/baseball coach for many years.Working with younger people has given me the skills to be an understanding and compassionate music instructor.i approach every student as an individual with different goals and needs. My teaching system is to approach every new student as an unique individual.I am very comfortable with teaching the foundations of music as well teaching how to improvise and solo, especially in the jazz context.I have had my own teaching practice for over 20 years with ages 6-80 years old.
I orient every lesson plan to each student as an individual.I focus on making learning music fun and challenging. I have prepared many students for both High School and college auditions.I also conduct student workshop small bands where students learn how to play and cooperate in a small group setting.Private lessons are based on what the student wants and needs to learn depending on their situation.I am very comfortable teaching to the foundations of music including: reading, counting. rhythms, musical interpretation, playing in tune, sound production, etc.
I have very high standards for teaching. That is why I did not start teaching until my fourties. At that point I felt that I had both the life experience and skills to be a good teacher. There is a lot more to playing music than just playing the right notes. That is what I call the mechanics of music but the not the soul.Obviously you must start with the basics to get to any deeper level of expression. That is what I am most passionate about. Why does anyone want to play an instrument? There are many reasons why and they are all valid.
He is very knowledgeable and gives feeds back very well.
We've only been going to Kenny for lessins for a short while, but he has managed to increase my son's playing confidence tremendously, and seems keen on encouraging a passion for Jazz music in his students. Highly recommend!!

very good at his instrument, is able to provide great feedback and direction to the student, in a way that motivates.
Ken is fantastic!! After the first lesson, Ken knew exactly where my strengths and weaknesses were. I have taken 4 lessons so far and i feel great about my progress so far! Thank you so much Ken!!
explains thoroughly and easy to understand
Great teacher!
Kenny teaches me to stretch out but to go slow. I'm learning quickly and getting things in order. My only complaint is with Zoom. I have a hard time hearing Kenny play and I know he has a hard time hearing me, too. We've tried different settings, different microphones, different computers, etc., but even at it's best, Zoom isn't really good. Unfortunately, I know nothing better.
Taking saxophone lessons. He is a fun and easygoing teacher. I am a complete newbie in music, so it is exactly what I needed to get started and not lose the motivation behind the frustration of knowing nothing. I can make progress without being overwhelmed by the amount of information I need to learn.
I'm very pleased with Kenny M.'s teaching. He is obviously a very dedicated teacher and he knows how to customize his lessons to the wants and needs of his individual students.
Having Kenny as my sax professor has been great , to say the least. He has very attentive to details and his expertise is clear as he is always able to pinpoint specific things that I should work on. I can’t say enough about his ability to teach, his knowledge, attitude and his pleasant guidance. I would highly recommend him.
10/10! Kenny is the man!
