I am a full-time professional musician who teaches, guitar, bass, mandolin and banjo, with a BA in Music Education from Shepherd University, WV. I have been playing professionally for 37 years and teaching for 26. I am passionate about music and have known since a very young age that music is my calling. I have had the honor of playing with gold record recording artist's as well as giving guitar instuction to internationally known guitarist's. I am excited about teaching via the internet as it will give access to individuals who want to take lessons that otherwise may not be able to obtain instruction from qualified instructors. It also opens my horizons to teach students around the US and share my love for music.
I have been teaching for the past 26 years and have had as many as 50 regular students a week. I have had several students who have gone on to earn college degrees in music, both in performance and education. I teach students to read music and provide them a firm foundation in chord structure and music theory that will enable them to play diverse styles of music. Once a student achieves a certain level of compentency, I encourage them to bring music to their lessons that especially appeals to them so they can develop their talent and love of music in a way that serves them best. I love teaching students of all ages and welcome anyone that wants to learn!
For beginning students I typically start with Aaron Stang music books, but am able to adapt if a student comes to me with a book in place. Once they have a grasp of fundementals, I will work with them in chord theory and improvesation. As a student progresses, I will focus more on their area of musical interest. If a student already has experience with their instrument, I will assess them individually and go from there. I am able to teach advanced students.
There is nothing that thrills me more than to see a student develop a love for music. To achieve this, I start with the basics ie., reading music, and set goals from there. I praise and encourage students and provide an environment where they are eager to learn more. I listen to their goals and what they would like to accomplish and adjust my teaching style to suit the individual.
