Overview:
It is a great joy for me to connect and commune with students in learning their chosen instrument they wish to learn to play. I have a B.S. from Antioch University. I place great value in their well being and helping them to learn to play their instrument. I come from a family of Concert level musicians. I began playing the saxophone when I was nine and have continued. I studied music theory, piano, guitar, saxophone, trumpet and clarinet in school and in private lessons for a number of years. I have played in rock-n-roll bands, folk music, wind ensembles, jazz band in college, concert band and marching band.
EXPERIENCE
During my University days, I tutored many students in academics and found that I deeply enjoyed connecting with each student and that I had a natural talent for doing do. I began teaching Music in 2006 in music studios. I teach in my own studio and in homes where I continue to do so. I am a Concert Band Director having done so for 10 years in a private school which was a great joy for me. My experience in teaching one-on-one is with guitar, ukulele, piano, clarinet, saxophone, and trumpet, drum set, school band percussion, flute, bass guitar, trombone.
METHODS USED
My focus with each student is to tune into them in a way that I can then assess their physical, mental and emotional abilities. I ask each student what they want to learn with their instrument. If they do not know, we then start with the basics to establish a solid foundation in music with their instrument. Along the way, I ask the student what kind of music they like. I add pieces that represent their interest. Enjoyment is a key factor for the student to want to continue improving. I help prepare students who want to perform in a recital. I ask students to learn scales. With each scale, I challenge them to improvise and create melodies which creates further enjoyment for them.
LESSON STYLE
My teaching style begins with my assessment of each student's abilities, physical, mental, and emotional. By this method I am able to design a realistic program for each student. Patience and encouragement go hand in hand, acknowledging their accomplishments all along the way. Once some fundamentals are established, I add pieces that the student has an interest in learning. In preparing for recitals I often accompany students which adds not only enjoyment for them but encouragement for them to overcome hesitancy to perform publicly. And this helps students gain confidence.
