Awards:
2008 - Berklee College of Music Scholarship Recipient
Overview:
My name is Kenny Redding Jr. and I've been teaching for 6 years. I began playing piano, drums and singing at the age of 4. Since then I studied and performed on multiple instruments including piano, vocals, viola, cello, non-pitched percussion, & bass. My studies include Professional Music - Contemporary Writing & Production at Berklee College of Music, & Music Production at Full Sail University. During this time I was fortunate enough to acquire an extensive amount of knowledge & training that I feel are essential tools for success in music. Whether it was composing for film or performing classical improvisation live on broadway, I've been able to apply these tools throughout my most recent years of work experience. Diversity in my musical experience allows for me to appropriately structure my lessons in a way that caters more accurately to each students musical goals.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience began in spring 2008 at a local church where taught piano & drums classes as a music instructor to students ranging from ages 5-18. Throughout college I was a piano and voice instructor at the Boys and Girls Club Music Clubhouse in Boston MA where I continued teach students ranging from ages 10-18. For the past three years I have continued to provide private instruction and tutoring for students of all ages. I find that my students have a much more pleasurable learning experience, when they are able to apply what they learn in ways that are meaningful to their desire and aspirations. I've always encouraged my students to uphold a positive work ethic and mindset when embarking on their musical journey. I not only emphasize on the development of fundemental skills, but I strive to do so in ways that are captivating and supports their musical goals.
METHODS USED
In order to communicate musical ideas most effectively, I feel it is equally as essential to develop the students ear as well as their reading abilities. Each student will receive a personally customized work packet that includes sheet music, worksheets, and possibly audio/video samples. The packet implements training techniques & exercises that will develop the students reading skills and ear-training, along with basic theory. The work packets also include sheet music to songs chosen by the students, in order allow them to apply their techniques in ways that are self-fulfilling.
LESSON STYLE
My goal and main priority as a teacher is to help my students achieve, then surpass their musical aspirations. I tend to use the first couple of lessons to get a feel for the students musical goals along with their current musical ability. Upon initial assessment of the students goals & playing level, I formulate a lesson plan that will most accurately develop the skills necessary to achieve their goals. I also strive to incorporate creative ways to keep my students inspired and eager to learn more. One way I enjoy motivating the students is to help them apply techniques and skill they learn to songs that they enjoy most.
