Overview:

Hi there! I am a unique individual with a passion for teaching and nourishing the growth of others. My end goal is to become a professor of music composition at a credible university, and to teach others to play guitar and write music. I am a member of the LDS church, a family man, faithful husband, and an earnest father. I graduated with a BS degree in Integrated Studies with an emphasis in Music in 2018. In pursuing this degree I was proffered many performance opportunities. I was also able to take every course offered in guitar, composition, improvisation, and music theory. I am also currently enrolled in the Masters program at the University of Utah for music composition. I have been privileged to learn from several guitar instructors with a variety of different musical backgrounds. I am excited to meet you and to facilitate your progress in guitar and music.

EXPERIENCE

I have been teaching students the guitar for four years now. My students have included individuals of all age groups and walks of life. I began teaching my freshman year of college and supported my family while going to school. My musical journey began when I was 17 years old. Although I started musical instruction a little later, it has since become a life-defining purpose for me. In the past year I have composed what will soon become my first EP album. I have also written music in a variety of genres, and received instruction from several professional performers and composers.

METHODS USED

I believe that a degree of flexibility should always be present within the learning environment. I generally try to understand and establish mutual expectations to ensure that my students are getting the best education possible. I also believe firmly in many of the tried and true methods of musical instruction. This instruction generally includes learning topics such as music theory, improvisation, scale to chord relationships, rhythm, playing technique, composition strategies, pieces of interest, reading notation and/or tabs, and many other pertinent aspects of music. Lastly, I believe that it is important to give students a quality education that will provide them with a solid foundation upon which they can build even after they stop taking guitar lessons.

LESSON STYLE

My teaching curriculum generally involves a degree of structure mixed with topics of student interest. For example, there are certain aspects of music that any student should probably learn in order to gain a true understanding of musicianship. Likewise, I certainly understand that it is important to find joy in the journey, and to tailor guitar lessons to each individual student. My hope is that each of my students will come away with a quality education in music. I also do my best to ensure that each student is treated with respect, and is able to proceed at a pace that is workable and realistic.
