BS, Duquesne University, Music Therapy
I'm a flute teacher interested in educating young flutists as whole musicians, integrating music theory, ear training, eurhythmics, and history where applicable. With a background in music therapy, I have a complex understanding of how music and music learning interact with a person's body, mind, and spirit, and I believe that becoming better musicians can make us better human beings, if we let it. I relish the opportunity to get to know my students and share my knowledge and expertise while being enriched by their lives as well.
I began teaching flute students as a high school student myself, and taught a few lessons in college. I admit my experience is limited, but I definitely have the knowledge, the expertise, and the passion it takes to make a great teacher, as well as having several music teachers with long, successful careers in my family that I can turn to for mentoring.
I use the Trevor Wye method books for flute. There are two basic method books for beginners, and comprehensive, themed books for advanced players that focus on Tone, Technique, Articulation, Intonation, Vibrato, Breathing, and Scales. I was brought up in this school of flute playing, as were my teachers before me. It is a time-tested set of books that has produced many excellent flutists.
Though I use my method books as a trusted point of entry for flute instruction, no two students are alike! As my student, you will be expected to let me know what your specific goals are for flute playing, as well as your interests and passions both within music and outside of it. I'll work with you to develop the kind of instruction that will best suit your needs, and together we'll make sure you are getting what you expect. I encourage my students to speak up if they feel we need to change something about how we are doing lessons.
