I am a student of the Music Department at the University of Pennsylvania and I am seeking employment in fields relevant to my passion: music. I am studying jazz drums and general music theory. I am a member of the school's big band program, having also acted as business manager, booking gigs and performing all around Philadelphia. I also play with multiple groups outside of school. I have over a decade of experience playing guitar, bass, and drums as well as strong foundational experience in vocalization and keyboard. I have performed dozens of shows with big bands, jazz combos, rock bands, and choirs. I have recorded both professionally and in my own practice space. I have experience teaching young children percussion, as well as general teaching experience with children ages 3-8. I love setting a good example for young people and sharing my love of music with them. As an intelligent, hard-working, and personable young man, I believe I am well-equipped to the task of instruction.
Despite my young age, I've had extensive experience in Early Childhood Education as well as one-on-one music lessons. I gave my first lesson as a high school graduate to a neighbor who wanted to learn drums and start a band. I was able to provide a technical foundation for him to feel comfortable playing with others. In no time I was working with his band on learning songs to play at a school performance. I continued teaching percussion in to West Philadelphia high school students while attending the University of Pennsylvania. I took a sabbatical and worked as a substitute preschool teacher, which helped grow my patience, communication skills, and love of teaching. I look forward to bringing this energy to our lessons!
My experience is mostly with beginning students, so I take an easy-going approach. We will begin with fundamentals, either working out of one of my books, one of the student's, or with a different modality depending on the student's learning style. I will facilitate a fun, exciting environment in which the student can choose their path. Possible goals could be: learning your favorite song, memorizing scales, learning to read music, learning to solo, and anything else that pops into the student's head!
My teaching style is completely focused on making music fun. I believe every person has innate ability to learn the fundamentals of an instrument, so working through the initial anxiety of learning a new skill is necessary. By letting the student set the pace and offering an array of modalities to tackle students' goals, we will create an environment in which the pure joy of music can shine. Each lesson will include warm-ups, goal-setting, and free expression, with a specific curriculum (either out of a book or customized) guiding us always.
