M.M. Trombone Performance, University of North Texas, Class of 2012
Overview:
I have studied and performed music for over 30 years. I graduated from California State University, East Bay in 2010, and have completed 1 year of my M.M. in Trombone Performance from the University of North Texas. I am currently based in the SF Bay Area and plan to continue my studies here. I have extensive experience playing in many ensembles in many different styles, such as: orchestra, brass quintet, jazz band, rock band, horn sections, chamber music, as well as numerous others. I have participated in Masterclasses with reknowned conductors, such as Esa-Pekka Salonen and Gustavo Dudamel. I have studied Music History and Music Education in depth as well, and I have a deep understanding of musical styles and form.
EXPERIENCE
I have taught music for over 10 years. I have had great success teaching Trombone, Trumpet, French Horn, Guitar and Ukulele. Many of my students have studied with me for long periods, some for over 7 years! I have also studied with many of the best teachers in Music Education today. I have worked with some of the best conductors and musicians in the world and have gained valuable insight from my experiences. I have taught students of all ages, from 5 years old to 75. I take a fun and informational approach to music, with lots of music theory and historical background.
METHODS USED
I like to emphasize fundamentals, especially if a student is just beginning. I believe a strong foundation makes it easier as they progress. For all instruments I always have my students prepare both technical exercises and solo material. I always emphasize historical context to bring the music to life. I also like to teach the music theory side of music, explaining chords, sequences and progressions. I can inform students how to improvise in jazz, as well as play at the level required for symphonic performance.
LESSON STYLE
I believe encouragement is the best way to help a student succeed. I believe music lessons should be enjoyable and try to make them fun. But even though we have fun, we still have to play the best we can and get the work done. I try to inspire my students to enjoy music, not force them. I believe music should be fun and engaging and not just "work" or a "Requirement". I believe students learn better when they understand the theory and history behind music. I find they are better able to relate to the music and have a personal experience with it.

Kevin is very friendly and professional trombone teacher. During the first session he assessed my 12 year old son's strengths and identified areas for development. He has helped him refine his technique which helps our son in band class but also has him working on duets that help him grow in new ways. He comes to our home and is always very punctual. I would highly recommend Kevin!
