2008-2010 - Mississippi Lion’s Band Tubist
2010-2015 - Principal Tuba/Euphonium for University of Mississippi Wind Ensemble
I am a patient teacher who enjoys working with students of all ages. I played tuba, euphonium, and bass trombone in every ensemble in college and spent time on as the principal player in the top ensemble on multiple instruments. I obtained my Master’s degree in 2016 and immediately began teaching elementary school music. I love working with small children because it allows me to focus on teaching fundamentals of music and I get to reach more students because I teach 800 kids a week. It also allows me to keep my schedule clear so I can work one on one with students outside of school. I currently teach 4 middle school students and 2 high school students weekly.
My teaching experience began in high school when I first began teaching private lessons. I have taught dozens of students individually in the last decade. I have taught college music appreciation classes, high school and middle band as well as elementary music. My time in an elementary classroom has taught me patience as an educator and I apply that patience and meticulous attention to detail into my private studio. I am able to adapt my teaching style to meet the needs of my students as I have taught All-State caliber high school students as well as kindergarteners.
I value musical literacy very highly and spend a great deal of time focusing on the fundamentals of reading music. I believe that if one can read the music and hear it in one’s head that anyone can play it. In addition to literacy I teach my students to establish a daily checklist of long tones and lip flexibility. I make my lessons engaging for everyone and am flexible to the students needs regardless of ability levels. I’ve always by the philosophy that every piece of music has some level of intrinsic value and if allowing a student to play Beatle’s cover songs helps teach them syncopated rhythms then my goal is met.
I teach my students to be self sufficient and to problem solve by themselves. By doing this it allows the student to make logical decisions and corrections in their own practice so they can establish routines of their own. I want all students to be able to evaluate their own performances so they can use their own individual practice time efficiently. I love seeing students find a musical solution to a problem on their own because it means that I’ve taught them to use their own knowledge for their own good.
