I'm a Taiwanese who studied music in the States for 7 years, I have a lot of performing and teaching experiences from both before and after I got to the States. I have played in the big band at the university level in different places for 6 years, as well as several different small groups. The places I have played are Syndicate at Denton, TX, Cafe Aroma, and Macomb Country Club and Macomb, IL, Iron Post at Urbana, IL, Jazz Showcase at Chicago, IL, Jazz Bistro at St. Louis , Missouri.
My teaching experiences dates back to my college days, I began to teach in private music institution in Taiwan, and I also taught saxophone sectionals from elementary school to high school band in Taiwan. Although I am a jazz player, I have many experiences on teaching marching band and concert band saxophone. I also taught private students when I studied in the U.S., the students are intermediate level jazz players. I love to see the progress of students every time we meet, and I also try to make the lesson as fun as possible.
For beginner saxophone students, I taught them basic saxohone skills for couple lessons, and I will choose either Rubank method or Jazz Phrasing by Greg Fishman according to students' interests. For beginner flute and clarinet students, I taught them long tones and scales in the beginning, and then I will use method book such as Rubank or Rose to help them enjoy to play these two instruments. For intermediate or higher level saxohpone players, I will design the individual lesson according to student's level, the lesson will combine of technique, chord scale exercise, ear trainning, improvisation, and tune learning.
I am a organized person, so is my teaching style. I will use a calender or notebook to track the progress of every week for each student, so that he/she can always refreshes when he/she practices at home. Also, I will recommend several recordings to students to listen to, and try to analyze those music in very understandable sense so that students can have fun in their instrumental learning.
