I am a musician that loves to perform and teach. I have led the saxophone section in many bands and have always produced high quality musicians that love to perform and improve their musical technique. I am able to assess the needs and learning abilities my students to determine which meathods are most effective. I have performed in large ensembles and as a soloist with great success. It is my goal to ensure that my students are able to achieve their musical goals, whether it be to earn a scholarship for college or perform for leisure.
I learned to read music in middle school, originally as flute player. The summer prior to my freshman year in high school I thought myself how to play the saxophone and participated in the band camp at Cass Tech High School in Detroit, Michigan. By my sophomore year, I was the section leader and by the time I graduated high school I had over 10 full scholarship offers from several universities. As I continued my education at FAMU, I continued to and teach and give lessons at high schools that needed help developing musical talent.
For younger students, I utilize method books to familiarize the student with reading music. Scales, and whole tones to develop the embouchure and intonation. For intermediate and advanced students an emphasis is placed on mastering the essentials necessary to succeed in the musical ensembles and as a soloist. Articulation, timing, phrasing and dynamics are the key focus to further the players technique. Sight Reading, Scales Practice, and various exercises are utilized to build technique and endurance.
My style of teaching is based in milestone achievements. We determine the players current level and identify their goals. Once I have an idea of what the student wants to accomplish it becomes easy to customize a plan for each student's development. Once the student has demonstrated that he or she is practicing independently and making forward progress with the lessons, I add more complex musical arrangements to further improve reading and technique. The goal is to ensure the student is genuinely enjoying the learning process and is improving with every lesson.
