Bachelor Degree: Elon University
Magna Cum Laude Graduate in Music
I am a lifelong lover of music and am passionate about the art of performance. In 2019, I graduated from Elon University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music with a focus on voice, studying both performing and pedagogy. My background in voice includes musical theatre, classical and pop/rock vocal styles. I have been music directing for a cappella groups and musical productions for the past four years, working with both amateurs and aspiring professionals. I plan on attending graduate school to further my education and capabilities. I hope to meet and work with you!
I have been teaching music in various capacities for approximately the last four years. My private studio has included both in-person and online lessons. As the music director of Smooth Progressions A Cappella, I worked with college students of various skill levels to produce an EP and an album. We sang everything from Irish folk ballads to Justin Timberlake. I was also the assistant music director for Kids of the Arts in New York City, putting on High School Musical with over thirty children ages ten to eighteen. I’ve studied vocal pedagogy in classes and seminars, in addition to learning from my personal voice instructor. I am comfortable working with people of all ages and skill levels!
For young and/or beginner vocalists, I focus on classical fundamentals, as they are the roots for success in all genres. This means working on breath support and learning about vowel placement. The next step would then be developing and strengthening the singer’s vocal range and repertoire. For adults and/or more experienced vocalists, I focus on what the student is trying to accomplish and help them move towards their goals. I also like to provide challenges to help the singer grow their potential and versatility. For piano students, I focus on basic techniques and theory, as the two go hand in hand with becoming piano proficient!
Above all else, I believe that the learning process should be rewarding and fun! Setting incremental goals that can realistically be accomplished is important because developing skills of this type takes time and patience. I like students to work on both things that are their “bread and butter” while simultaneously working on more challenging material that will get students out of their comfort zone. I value having a positive personal and professional relationship with students, as lessons should feel like a safe space that students should WANT to come to!
I have had the pleasure of working with Kevin during my time as an undergrad when I was studying musical theatre, and I can say with certainty that he is the vocal coach that you NEED ! An excellent listener to concerns and an advocator for unlocking skills and strengthening technique whether you are a beginner or an advanced vocalist. With this in mind, I highly encourage you look to him for his services. An open hearted teacher with constructive feedback and a knack for building on existing strengths and turning weak points into strong ones. Kevin W. Is the Vocal Coach for you !
