I'm passionate about teaching, composing, and performing music to help make this world a better place. Music is a universal language that speaks to the hearts of people from every culture and race. I believe it is a way to communicate and share love and beauty not only with people, but the very heart of God. I love helping people grow as they discover new ways to express and share themselves through music. I've used music as a way to entertain and to bless people and to worship God. It's taken me from concert halls and cathedrals to churches in the trash dumps of Africa and all the way to Holy sights in Jerusalem. I've sung over the sick and dying and I've seen music bring laughter joy and freedom. There is nothing more exciting than seeing the power of music at work in someone's life.
In my senior year of high school I began mentoring some of the younger cello students. That’s really where teaching started. When I got to college I started teaching a few lessons for a local music school. Later I developed a choir at a correctional facility for troubled youth. These were kids coming out of drugs and criminal activity. I found that they actually loved learning to sing. Once I graduated from college I began teaching some private lessons and helping the local high school music program. I was a worship leader for 14 years. I started writing songs (what I called making up songs) when I was 8 years old. Music was a way to express myself creatively and accurately. I helped many of my students improve not only in technique (which is important) but in connecting with their own authenticity and confidence. I have mostly taught voice lessons, though I have had a few piano and cello students.
For beginning vocal students (sometimes experienced singers) I like to start with making sure they have free breath flow and know how to practice strengthening their voice without holding or creating any unnecessary tensions. Breath and posture are foundational. I like the wholistic and classical approach. I find that students who wish to sing pop will still benefit from classical training and will know how to take care of their voices. This kind of training will not detract from other methods, but it will definitely add to a more healthy voice and greater mastery of singing. I'm able to help students get to and through the intermediate level.
For cello students I like to make sure the fundamentals of good bowing and fingering are in place. From there I like to work on expression and help people make the music come alive. After scales and basic technique are in place I like to work with students on learning to improvise (or jam) with other styles of music. While I did play in string ensembles and orchestras, my main focus and experience with cello has been in band and worship music settings. I can help individuals with musicality, phrasing, intonation and tone quality.
As an instructor I want to be able to inspire my students to grow as much as possible. I want them to have fun and enjoy themselves, but I also want to help them discover the courage and confidence within them that will help them face pain and difficulties and transform problems into expressions of beauty and freedom. Everyone has something uniquely wonderful to give through music. I believe in encouraging students and praising them for good work, but I'm not afraid to point out things that need work. I don't do this in a negative way. All of us have things to work on. I won't harass students for not practicing or performing poorly, but I will kindly talk to them about it. I expect them to practice and they will grow much faster if they work on their own. Part of my lesson times include teaching how to practice. However, I will always find a way to make the most out of an opportunity with a student. I'd rather not have to spend the whole lesson times helping students learn their songs. I'd rather spend time helping them learn how to express themselves with freedom and skill. At times I use modeling in my teaching style. This means I will give examples the student examples they can imitate; however, I firmly believe that students should not just imitate, but should find the freedom of their own voice. I am personally still finding that for myself, but I have many things I can teach about finding freedom to sing naturally.
