I love teaching music to motivated students of all ages. I graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in Vocal Music Education in 2010, and am almost finished with my doctorate in choral conducting. I have been singing in choirs since I was in fifth grade and studying voice privately since 2000. I've had the opportunity to travel the world singing in choirs. I love helping students find their voices!
I started teaching privately in 2010 as part of a class assignment, and discovered I really enjoy doing it. I also love teaching and conducting choirs and have done that in various capacities for the past several years. I really believe that singing in choir is the best vocal training for young students. Choral singing and solo singing do not have to be opposite worlds! Both can be done healthily, and I like helping students discover this, or even just discover a new hobby.
It's important to me that students enjoy what they are singing--if they don't, they won't be motivated, are less likely to practice, and they won't progress as quickly. Still, I believe students should sing a variety of literature (and may even find something they didn't know they enjoyed), and regularly start beginning students with some simple Italian art songs. Students in my studio are exposed to art songs, folk songs, opera arias, and showtunes. While I am happy to provide recommendations from my own library, students are expected to use their own music so they can practice on their own during the week.
I approach each student differently because each person has different strengths, needs, and goals. No two lessons are ever taught the same way because each one is tailored to the individual. I am happy to work with students on specific repertoire for auditions or other events, and/or on general literature simply for the love of singing and the joy of growth. It is important to realize that much of success depends on the motivation of the student and that there are no "quick fixes," but if we work together with realistic expectations, everyone will be successful.
