2002- Performed with Westminster Sypmhonic Choir and New Jersey Symphony at Carnegie Hall
Overview:
I began my career teaching music in several elementary schools near Princeton, New Jersey right after I finished graduate school in 2002. I've spent much of my career teaching in one form or another, and recently took a two year hiatus to be home with my baby son. I love musical theater and have been in many, many regional theater productions. I have been the lead or principal character in a number of shows. I am now resuming teaching on a part time basis and am very excited about that! In my spare time I swing dance, stand up paddleboard and work with golden retriever rescue.
EXPERIENCE
I love singing and I love teaching. I've taught voice off and on since 2002. My studio has included students from EVERY age bracket, ages 6- 70 and I've truly enjoyed each! When not teaching singing, I've taught elementary music preK-8, directed junior high choir and musicals, taught kindergarten and tutored students K through college. I love performing and have been soloist in many classical pieces including Vivaldi's Gloria, Hayden's Little Organ Mass and several works by Mozart. I especially love performing in musical theater productions and have been in numerous shows including Oklahoma, Jesus Christ Superstar and Hello Dolly. My favorite leading role so far has been Rosie in Bye Bye Birdie.
METHODS USED
I have a very large tool box of methods, strategies and exercises. I like to begin by hearing from my student what the specific goals are. I put together a structured plan specifically for that student, so we can work toward achieving those goals. Lessons are often structured in 2 parts: 1) actual singing and song work, 2) exercises. The exercise portion can include ear training and sight singing components as well as vocalises. For students who find it helpful, I like to add a physical warm up that can involve a few yoga, Tai Chi or Qi Gong exercises to release tension or anxiety and get us ready to sing. If a student wishes, I happily assign homework and provide feedback.
LESSON STYLE
Although I have been trained as a classical singer, I enjoy singing and teaching singing in a variety of genres. I believe the principals and foundation laid in classical training regarding things like breathing, placement and resonance can be transferred to any style of singing. Human beings have been singing since the dawn of their creation. Singing should be an easy, joyful thing. No lesson or teacher should ever take the joy out of the experience. My goal as a singing teacher is to guide students rather than train them. I want to facilitate the healthiest, most expressive and joyful singing possible; whether that singing is done on the operatic stage, the musical theater stage, the karaoke stage, on the church pulpit or in your livingroom!

Kiersten is wonderful and is extremely talented. She has taught me so much and I feel so at ease with her. She and I are also working on my confidence issue with singing in a public situation. I feel I am getting close!
I am also thrilled to have found someone with such talent that lives near me in Fredericksburg. I would highly recommend Kiersten.
