I was born and raised in the beautiful Northern California area and from a very young age, I began to sing my heart out in my homeschool choir, in church and all over the house. I am a graduate of Simpson University where I received a B.A with an emphasis in voice. I trained as a Mezzo-Soprano in Classical voice and later went on to study Musical Theater. I've had the privilege of performing in roles, such as Mrs. Darling (Peter Pan), Mrs. Cratchit (A Christmas Carol), Regina (Rock of Ages), Mary Poppins (Mary Poppins), Glinda the Good Witch (The Wizard of Oz), Ensemble/Beggar Woman (Les Misérables), Penny (Hairspray) and more. I am currently active/pursuing in the areas of "Voice Acting", TV/Film, private vocal instruction, singer, lyricist and stage performer based out of the Los Angeles area.
Since graduating I’ve had the opportunity to utilize my music degree in crave vocal instruction, directing, musical directing, after school music instruction and (my greatest passion) performing on stage. I have been teaching private lessons for about 12+ years now and performing for over 20 years. I’ve studied with a variety of teachers and their styles, which feel has given me. Good sense of what works and doesn’t work well. I’m always pushing myself to learn more and grow in my OWN performing journey and vocal growth and feel that has helped me to understand a better way to help my students - going through the same processes as them.
I have created a well rounded style that is flexing to each student’s individual needs. Whether you’re in need of help preparing for an audition, performance character development for a role or simply continued work on your craft - I’m ready and excited to be apart of your journey. There is definitely a special place in my heart for teaching Musical Theater, but there is always a place and an emphasis for all genres of music. By adding some influences of “Speech Level Singing” techniques to the student’s study, my goal is to give my them the opportunity to discover their full vocal potential and open their minds to new ideas. I’ve come to understand that everyone learns very differently, so there’s never going to be “one way” for every student. I’ll never pretend to know all of the answers, but what I can promise is that I will continue to push on different “doors” until we learn what works for you. Since studying the technique of “Speech Level Singing” for my own vocal growth, I’ve begun to incorporate a portion of it into my private instruction. This style has opened up my voice like no other ever has (in a healthy and powerful way) and I’ve noticed incredible growth in my students, which has been immeasurable. An overall idea of what a typical lesson would look like is this: starting with warm-ups/placement exercises to ready the voice for the work we are about to do. We will talk technique throughout so there’s an understanding of the “why” behind it. I usually like to do this as often as I can, so the student can have a deeper knowledge of how the mechanism works with the body. It’s so important to know what’s going on so the student can “check in” with themselves when they’re singing. This way they know (when they’re on their own) when it feels/sounds “right” vs “wrong”. I want to empower them to be able to identify the challenge happening and feel comfortable to know how to fix it since we are only together for a limited amount of time each week. I will incorporate the same understanding applicable to the song/project we are working on in the lesson. In addition, we will address proper breathing, healthy and safe techniques, mental health behind the areas of challenge and/or bad habits that are occurring, and much more!
My favorite statement to my students is, “Be good with the weird”. I say this because often times we make crazy sounds and do strange exercises in the learning process, but I promise it pays off…plus, I’ll “do the weird” with you! Regardless of what you need help with, we will build on where you’re currently at and find specified ways to work on your needs. It’s so important to remember that we only have a limited time together - so my goal is to give you the tools and get you feeling comfortable to follow through with the techniques to work on them in your own time (in between our lessons). Consistency is key! It takes time to create positive muscle memory in your mind, body and voice.
