I love to teach piano. After my students learn basic piano skills, I let them select repertoire they are interested in playing, from genres such as;Pop, Rock, Jazz etc. I introduce composition work, basic music theory, and music history. I can successfully teach NYSSMA Repertoire as well.
I have a Master of Science degree in Music education from Hofstra University. I have taught piano over 10 years. I hold a yearly recital at Steinway Piano Gallery. I encourage regular practice from my students, and believe that playing for friends and family is a must. Holiday music is fun for my students and I spend a month letting my students select holiday pieces to play. My main objective is for my students to have fun in the lessons and feel empowered. I believe each piece played is an accomplishment at any level and any age!
For Beginning students I have my own book. It focuses on learning a song to play, clapping the rhythm to that song while writing the music notes and making the connections from notes to piano keys. As students progress we incorporate scales, and exercises from such books as Dozen a Day series and learning to compose a song or play a duet with the teacher.
My teaching style is to connect with each student. I believe it is important, because every student learns at a different pace and in different ways, so the lessons can not be overly structured. I believe that all aspects of music (playing the pieces, reading music, theory, rhythm and history of the composers) are all important and should be covered in the lessons.
