I am a multi faceted music therapist, teacher, and performer and I enjoy teaching all ages and abilities. There are many ways to learn and there are always ways to learn the music you would love to play. I am happy to teach most genres on bass, piano, guitar, ukulele, and voice. I graduated from Baldwin Wallace University with bachelor of music degree in double bass performance and music therapy. I graduated from the University of Toronto with a Master of Arts in neurologic music therapy. Songwriting is another passion of mine and I’m happy to assist you in you or your composition journey as well.
I have been a practicing board certified music therapist since 2014. In that time I have worked as a music therapist in many settings but currently work for myself in my private practice. In my time as a music therapist I have taught piano, ukulele, guitar, voice, bass, songwriting, music theory, and more to an incredibly wide range of learners. I am patient with students who need to move slowly and can move quickly with clients who thrive in an energetic setting. As a performer I’ve learned to play in many demanding settings and have many strategies and tricks up my sleeve to ease anxieties and get into the performing environment you’d love to be in.
When beginning teaching I typically assess the learners general attention span, natural strengths, and what is motivating for them. I complete a beginner piano assessment to find out how the learner is with pattern recognition, any previous knowledge they may have, and what type of instruction they respond best to. When I understand the learners least restrictive environment I will choose the type of notation we start with. This can be traditional sheet music, pop chords, or adapted notation that may consist of numbers, letters, and/or colors.
My teaching style feels relaxed but I work hard to keep students in their least restrictive environment. We don’t want the student to be too challenged or bored. For this reason I am flexible with the content we work on and the order in which we complete different parts of the lesson. I give a lot of choice to students, maybe one day they want to start with working on some improvisation and want to work on their assigned pieces the 2nd half of the lesson. Then the next lesson we may start with their current assignment pieces. It’s important to have fun, stay flexible, and enjoy the process.
