I am a recent graduate of McGill University with a Bachelor of Music degree in Trumpet Performance and a second major concentration in Philosophy. I have had the honor and privilege to perform all over the world including New York City, Montreal, Berlin, and Tanglewood. Before college, I attended Juilliard's Pre-college division for 2 years. I mainly study and play classical, but I have frequently played with Latin, Rock and Jazz bands. I am currently applying for Masters programs in Trumpet Performance.
I have been teaching since I was 16. I frequently ran sectionals in my high school as well as at multiple youth orchestras. I taught privately on and off throughout high school and college. I encourage regular practice and help build problem-solving skills because in the end, you are your own best teacher. I also believe that the student should get exactly what they want out of their lessons, so we can be as flexible as we want with styles and of course, have fun! Having a balance of Performance practice as well as isolation work is key to being able to have true success on the instrument so my students are always encouraged to participate in solos, competitions, and recitals. I am always looking to bring on new students and assist with NYSSSMA solos, pop tunes, or even just to play duets.
For beginning students, I usually work with Hal Leonard's essential elements as well as use the piano as a tool for them to hear the pitches they are playing. Once the fundamentals are grasped we can work on introductory solo repertoire. For children I'd like to make this a bit more fun as well, introducing some easy tunes they will be familiar with or excited to play. (for example, Jason Derulo's song "Trumpets") For adults, I think its best to find out what their interests are and we can target what to work on from there. Music lessons have to be fun and engaging and I strive to make every lesson that way.
It's important to set realistic goals, I will assign short things to work on per week. I can tailor my instruction to the needs of any student by listening to their wants and needs. Everyone progresses at their own pace, so remaining patient and being able to work together to become successful is key! I find that sometimes it is best to find out from the student what makes them most excited about playing the instrument. A good balance of musical and technical proficiency will allowed them to get there and I am sure that I can help guide them in that direction.
