Teaching Certificate: Musician's Institute
Grammy Award winner for best RnB Male group with Prince
I'm a passionate musician that has over 25 years of professional experience in the music industry. I was born and raised into four generations of gospel singing back in Arkansas. My professional career began as a backup vocalist and keyboardist for Prince back in 1999. I recorded countless studio material such as "Rave n2 the Joy Fantastic" and "Musicology" and toured the world with him for over 17 years. Since then, I've produced music for artists such as Eminem, Dr Dre, and Eric Benét just to name a few. I taught a few years at Musicians Institute. I've since toured the world as a solo act and have had many success in the film and tv industry with shows such as Black-ish and movies like Jason Bourne where I did underscore work and or singing.
My teaching background stems from being taught as a 4 year old and seeing the passion of those who invested in me and my future from a young age. I was encouraged to have a strong practice routine on a consistent schedule so I try and instill the same practice in both my vocal and keyboard students. I believe music is supposed to be a fun experience and always look for ways to implement fun exercises so that the passion for learning is increased. I began teaching private lessons over 15 years ago now and still have a deep passion for passing along valuable lessons from the greats passed onto future greats!
I am a musician that plays by ear but I know some theory as well so I try to find a happy medium when it comes to the needs of each student. So understanding each student's gift is paramount in guiding them through certain fundamentals. My philosophy has been to not tamper with the raw talent but instead, grow it. Though unorthodox, I found that tapping into the soul of passion, the student will feel a greater sense of freedom and appreciation for the craft. It's art so I try and tap into what drives my students to use their respected gifts and build from there.
Each person is unique. I like to start my lessons by getting to know my students through assessing where their passion(s) lie. I know that each student progresses at their own pace. I help them set realistic goals through the development of lessons that serve as a measurement for growth. I believe in giving positive reinforcement to my students because as fun as playing the music is, I find that it can be a tough process when trying to learn. I tailor my instruction to the wants and needs of each student.
