I am an enthusiastic and versatile musician that has been learning and expounding upon my knowledge for over 18 years. I am from Tallahassee, FL, in which I am currently based and have attended high school (James S. Rickards H.S. c/o 2012) and college (Florida A & M University) where I studied Music Education. I have built many connections in music and have had the pleasure of performing with many great musicians, groups and organizations such as Tallahassee Nights Live, Tallahassee Swing, George Clinton, Fred Wesley, BK Jackson, TJ Norris, Rebirth Brass Band, and Drumline Live to name a few. I have also performed in various cities, venues, and countries such as the Bradford Blues Club in Tallahassee, Carnegie Hall in New York, tour dates in California, Atlanta, GA, Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Miami, FL, and Havana, Cuba.
My experience in teaching private lessons goes back to high school when my band director prompted the All-District and All-State band members to give lessons to our sections after school, which allowed me to immediately transition into giving private lessons as a college student. I have given music lessons at Mason's School of Music in Tallahassee, provided lessons as a self-employed contractor, as well as having served as a trumpet /trombone instructor with the Goodwill Band in Tallahassee. I have been providing my educational services since 2012 and I look forward to doing my part for Musika Lessons!
For beginners, I like to provide a custom packet of mine in which I send to my students to not only assess their current aptitude on the instrument but the packet will serve as a their fundamental guide in order to stay focused on progressing even while learning new and exciting music of their own choosing. Moving forward with Advanced, Intermediate, and Professional level students, I like to provide each level student the same materials and recommend the same books but in terms of personal music goals and solo repertoire, I would tailor the works to that student's progress level and what they plan to accomplish during our time together.
Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. Whether Jazz, Classical, Latin, Blues, etc. I believe that my performance experience has given me an edge in being able adapt and maneuver between different styles in order to cater to almost any student.
