I am a passionate musician who has been privately trained in instrumental and vocal music since I was 8 years old. I have had many opportunities as a trumpeter and vocalist, which include performing with the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra and Choir, the Sioux City Symphony, and soloing alongside legendary jazz trumpet player, Jon Faddis. I have won numerous awards in music, such as Outstanding Soloist at the AU Jazz Competition in 2012 and 2014, as well as Outstanding Brass Soloist at the KCKCC Jazz Competition in 2015.
I began teaching private music lessons in 2017 during college. I have continued this for the last two years. I love to teach my students not only how to play/sing music, but also how to perform! My goal is to always prepare students for performance, and to also give them chances to perform. To do this, we hold bi-yearly or yearly recitals. We have even recorded a studio album in the past! I always celebrate improvement in my students’ musical abilities, no matter what stage they are at in their journey. My students will always feel encouraged and supported in my studio!
For beginner trumpeters, I typically start with Hal Leonard’s Essential Elements and then slowly transition into solo repertoire that suits their skill set as they make it into the intermediate level. As advanced players, we will focus on refining skills with drill books as well as work on standards in solo repertoire.
For my vocal students, we will always work on range and flexibility exercises as well as vocal repertoire from multiple genres that suit the skill level of the singer. For all my students, we will discuss and practice proper performance etiquette and techniques.
I love seeing my students succeed and feel great about what they are learning and mastering. Because of this, I make sure to take each student into consideration and move them along at their individual pace. We set realistic goals in each lesson, while also pushing ourselves to be the best we can be! I like to give a clear understanding of what my students should be practicing while we are in the lesson, so that they are successful in their practice at home. This makes it so much more productive when I see them in their next lesson! I like to make music fun so that my students will be excited to learn more!
