I'm a fun and energetic music teacher and love teaching others the joy of music. I just graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a Bachelor of Arts degree in music, where my primary instrument was percussion. At UNI, I was involved in the Panther Marching Band, Symphonic Band, West African Drum Ensemble, Taiko Japanese drumming and many other ensembles. My goal is not to make everybody a professional musician, but to expand their knowledge in different genres and show them ways to create and appreciate music.
I began taking piano lessons at age 4 and started concert percussion in 5th grade. I knew I wanted to teach music when I was a freshman in high school, when I first fell in love with marching band. Music has been the area in my life I have excelled and God has given me talents of connecting with children and people to share my passion for music with them. I have taught individual and small group piano and percussion lessons part-time for about 4 years and love every minute of it. One of my favorite parts of teaching is how much I learn from my students during lesson time.
With beginning piano students, I use the Faber series of lesson, perfomance, theory and technique books. It's a great set that progresses fluidly and keeps students well rounded in their skills. In addition, I encourage students to use flash cards to practice with note names and musical symbols and terms. For percussion students, I would teach basic snare drum and 2-mallet techniques. This may come from basic rudiment lists, school curriculum, or any additional books appropriate for the student's level.
As I mentioned above, one of my favorite parts about teaching is learning from my students. I encourage my students to take chances, perform often, and to not be afraid of making mistakes. All experiences help you learn, no matter what level you are. I encourage students to make the music personal to them and relate to it in a way that suits their personality. This involves my, as a teacher, getting to know my students and learning about their life outside of music. Music helps people in all areas of life, so there is no use keeping it hidden or secluded. I teach to make students better people, not just better musicians.
