Principal Bassist in the Santa Rosa Symphony Orchestra
Regular substitute bassist in orchestras such as the San Francisco Ballet
Music has been the greatest blessing of my life, and to share this art and craft with students is one of the most fulfilling aspects of that. I have a Bachelors and Masters degree from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. I have performed in venues as small as tents in Mendocino and Bear Valley, and as large as the Davies Symphony Hall and the War Memorial Opera House. I have experience as a classical bassist, as well as a jazz bassist, going as far as to play with a Hip-Hop Orchestra and do improvisation accompanying spoken word. If you want a teacher that has broad experiences and work as a musician, and you are interested in broad forms of music making, then I hope you consider me as a mentor and teacher.
My teaching experience has not been particularly extensive professionally. I have taught privately on and off since I was 20, however I have never really had the time to pursue it the way I am now that I am out of school. With younger students, we work slowly and reach milestones confidently to ensure the student feels they are achieving something while we work to promote healthy playing habits that won't lead to injury down the path. We will also use a practice schedule and log to teach consistency and help encourage progress. With older students, these tools will be used on a case-by-case basis. The point of lessons to me is to improve at something you enjoy, and each student will enjoy different aspects of playing the bass. I can't wait to learn about you and share our love of bass!
For beginning students, I use the George Vance Progressive Repertoire, as well as scales and other technical exercises. I love playing with my students, so there will always be musical improvisation on my part so that some of these earlier exercises are a little more engaging. For older students who have been playing for a few years, we will work around what the student's goals are, what they are interested in doing or playing, and what will help them become the best musician they can be! At the end of the day, love of music and development of good technique are at the root of what we will be doing!
Learning a string instrument, let alone the bass, can be difficult. It takes a lot of time and effort, and not everything works for every student. I want to work with the student to provide the most ideal approach to help them succeed in their goals. I will teach the student that it is okay to make mistakes, but that it is important to work to correct them. There is no such thing as a perfect performance, but striving for excellence should be the goal of the students I work with. No matter what level the student is, I will help them achieve their goals, and work with them to become a better musician.
