2022 Teaching Assistantship @ University of Northern Colorado
I am a dedicated and passionate music educator and clarinetist. I graduated with my Bachelor’s in music education from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in 2019. I received my masters in clarinet performance at The University of Texas at El Paso in 2022 and just started by DA in clarinet performance at the University of Northern Colorado. I’ve always placed in the top ensembles in all universities and received teaching assistantships from both universities during my graduate studies. This summer, I will be participating in the Madeline Island Summer Music Festival in Wisconsin!
I started teaching since high school marching band when I became the clarinet section leader. I taught marching fundamentals, and would rehearse the music with my section. Since the latter half of my undergrad in college, I would run clarinet sectionals for wind ensembles and symphony orchestras. During my time in El Paso, I got the opportunity to conduct the UTEP Clarinet Choir from 2019-2022. I always have a passion of teaching the clarinet. I started teaching clarinet in El Paso. Tx. and worked mostly with beginners in middle school. I enjoy starting the clarinet with beginners or working on fundamentals and establishing a personal love to the clarinet for each student! Besides clarinet, I like to throw in some music theory skills as well to reinforce learning in the public schools.
For beginners, I usually work with the beginning band books that are established by the public schools they attend. If they aren’t in band yet, then I would start them on the Rubank Elementary Methods book for Bb clarinet. The Rubank methods are my go to for all levels, beginner, intermediate, and advanced. For intermediate students, I also use the Melodious and Progressive Students and for advanced students, I work out of the Rose 32 etudes and 40 studies. As for scales, I use several books that again, tailors to the needs of the student!
Besides personal growth on the clarinet, my goal is to help establish and maintain a love of clarinet and music for each student. I like to be flexible in my lesson plans and tailor my teaching to the needs of the student. I like to ask what the goals are for the student and parents and what they expect from me as a teacher. I believe in working hard but also being patient and acknowledging my students’ success. I also help establish realistic goals for the students to keep them motivated. Lastly, besides teaching clarinet, I like to make sure I save time for basic music theory teaching and teaching life skills through music!!!
Kornel taught my son weekly for over a year. He was an awesome teacher and was extremely flexible. When Covid hit, we did online lessons for a while and he was great using the online format as well. Kornel gave my son a solid foundation on the clarinet and he is doing great as a result. I highly recommend him!
Kornel taught my 13-year-old daughter during the short time we were living in Northern Colorado. He was always cheerful and encouraging, yet clear in his instruction and suggestions on how to improve her playing. His descriptions of the proper embouchure, chin and tongue positions helped me (an oboist) better understand how to support my daughter in her practice. He definitely knows clarinet, but more importantly, knows how to teach!
