BM, The Ohio State University, Violin Performance
Hello! My name is Kristen and I am a classically trained violinist, teacher, and artist. My degree is in Violin performance from The Ohio State University and I taught lessons to younger children during my college years. After graduating, I moved to Japan to teach English to Japanese high schoolers. Recently moved back home, I am excited to start teaching violin again!
I have a love for music, a love for violin, and a love for people and communication in general, which I feel enables me to be a good teacher. As long as the student has a desire to learn and is willing to put in practice time, I guarantee that the student will see improvement! As a teacher I feel it is my responsibility to provide my students with a healthy stream of encouragement. Honesty is key: losing interest or feeling disheartened about your playing is sometimes part of the journey, and I want to remain as open as possible so that my students can feel relaxed and able to talk to me honestly about how their practicing is going. My ideal student is someone who is excited about the violin. I have experience playing all styles of music (classical, jazz, rock, and more!) so if that is something you or your child is interested in, I can help! Age doesn't matter to me.
I teach violin under the traditional method. If the student is a beginner and a younger child, I use the Suzuki method as well, although I am not officially trained. I understand every person has their own unique learning style, and I'm very good at adjusting my style to suit you or your child's needs.
Active, engaging, and of course, fun! I try to be as thorough as possible without overloading my student with information. The biggest challenge in the beginning is learning about you as a student and how you learn. Obviously learning an instrument is very aurally challenging, however there many ways of learning: aural, visual, tactile, etc. The more you know about your own preferred learning style, the more smoothly our lessons will start out.
