My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part time at various studios and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio for the past 6 years. I like to emphasize a consistent schedule of practice, so that this helps the student progress in their studies. I have also found that by combining styles of classical and modern music can help the student gain a better understanding of their instrument. I encourage students to enter competitions and recitals, as well as work on their original compositions. Most importantly, we must have fun in each and every lesson!
For most students, I typically start with breathing exercises and warm ups to learn the student's voice. I would ask for the student to prepare a song of their choice and we would typically spend a few lessons learning the fundamentals and engaging in proper technique. I like to make learning fun, so there are a few exercises that I have up my sleeve that are engaging and fun, no matter what the student's ability level may be. Once becoming acquainted, we would then move into solo repertoire of the student's choice genre and dive deeper into expanding the voice and breathing ability.
Nothing means more to me than a student with an appetite and love for music! It warms my heart when a child grasps a concept in a lesson and really understands what we are aspiring to. This is the most rewarding for me as a teacher. It is very important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. By learning each student's needs, I can successfully tailor my instruction to help the student succeed and gain confidence in their musical ability!
