Overview:
I am an experienced and enthusiastic instructor who has been working with music students in the Pittsburgh area for over ten years. As a young child, my grandmother introduced me to the piano and it's been a life long passion ever since. Music has been a source of great opportunity for me, and has allowed me to work with wonderful musicians such as Ralph Zitterbart and Hanna Wu Li, who I worked closely with at Carnegie Mellon University. Piano teaching has also given me the chance to work with wonderful families from around the world, and I have found that I often learn many things from my students, as they learn from me. Learning music has been a creative outlet, a great source of joy, and has provided me the confidence and skills to learn other subjects. My hope is to share my gifts with my students so that they can develop a love and appreciation for music, as well as opportunities to grow and learn artistically.
EXPERIENCE
As a music teacher, I've been able to work with many different ages and levels in a variety of settings. Some schools I've worked with in the Pittsburgh area include the Carnegie Mellon Preparatory School, Saint Vincent College, Pittsburgh C.A.P.A. 6-12, The Yeshiva School, and the Center for Theater Arts. I have also been consistently teaching private piano in people's homes since I graduated from college. My work at Carnegie Mellon Prepatory school includes teaching the group classes for the beginning piano program, as well as preparing private students for recitals and competitions. I'm also a registered Music Together teacher, and teach classes at The Center for the Arts in Shadyside, and The Wilkins Community Center. My work with Music Together has allowed me to gain a lot of insight into how children ages 0-4 develop musically, and how important it is to begin exposing children to musical experiences early in life.
METHODS USED
The two methods I typically use for young beginners are "The Music Tree" by Franicis Clark, and "Piano Adventures" by Faber and Faber. As the child progresses, I add supplemental materials and more advanced performance pieces that may be used for recitals. For adults, there are a variety of good methods that I draw from, taking their genre and style preferences in mind.
LESSON STYLE
My teaching style is flexible and tailored to fit each student's unique abilities to help them achieve their fullest potential. By creating a positive and supportive learning environment, students are able to freely express themselves artistically, and learn to face challenges in order to acheive their goals. Lessons are custom made to go at the student's pace, and pieces are chosen based on the particular student's personality and interests. Students are strongly encouraged to participate in studio recitals several times a year, where they are able to socialize with other pianists and show off their new skills.
