I am someone who is passionate about music and loves working with students and seeing that passion grow in them as well. I have been playing the piano for 26 years and have learned many different styles, from classical to jazz to improv playing in different bands across the U.S. I graduated in 2005 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music with a Piano Performance minor. Having the opportunity to travel around the nation to perform has been an incredible experience as a musician.
I began teaching a couple years ago and have enjoyed seeing students develop a love for music and piano. If you love something, you work at it, so I highly encourage having a regular practice schedule outside of the lesson as this is a key point to developing the students skill and passion for music. Integrating different styles can help motivate the students to practice and learn, as well as making it fun. My students are greatly encouraged to enter competitions and recitals as this gives a sense of accomplishment as well as challenges them.
For beginners of all ages, I typically start with the fundamentals of music theory. For children, once they have grasped this, I will introduce solo repertoire and sight reading appropriate for their skill level. For adults, I try to find out what they are interested in and instruct accordingly. I like to keep practice fun and engaging for all ages and ability levels.
I love seeing students succeed and developing a love for music! Each student learns and progresses at different paces, so it is important to me to set realistic goals based on the individual. Encouraging and acknowledging their success is very essential to helping the student progress and desire to learn more.
