Overview:
I am a creative and thoughtful teacher who loves working with students and sharing what I have learned. I graduated from the Chicago College of Performing Arts with a Bachelor of Music degree in Violin Performance where I was able to study with two assistant concertmasters of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. I graduated with a Master of Arts in Teaching degree from Longy School of Music of Bard College. I recently went through a certificate program in social emotional arts through UCLArts & Healing. I truly believe the arts are healing no matter what your background or circumstance. I have had my violin on loan through the Rachel Barton Pine Foundation since 2005.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience dates back to my freshman year of high school where I tutored a younger student through the Suzuki Method for the next 5-6 years until she went off to college out of state. I have taught part time through the Chicago Public Schools where I worked with two kindergarden aged students. I have lesson plans and objectives I would like to hit at each lesson but if a skill we are working on still needs more practice then I will not rush to the next task. Along with classical music, I believe students should be able to learn songs that they listen to on a regular basis, whether it's a pop or rock song, etc.
METHODS USED
For beginning students I do follow the Suzuki Method to an extent, where they learn the main parts of the instrument and bow, how to hold it to prevent as much tension as possible, and some general ear training exercises to help with learning pieces. I have a list of games to do that especially work well with younger beginners, since their attention span is limited and I want to make the lesson time productive but also fun for them. I like to follow the Suzuki Method but use other pieces as well. I believe that anyone can learn an instrument, my job as a teacher is to find out their best mode of learning. No everyone learns the same.
LESSON STYLE
I start by setting realistic goals for each lesson, but I will not rush past something just to be able to finish the lesson plan I had written out for the day. The core fundamentals of violin are so important and believe that everything deserves adequate attention. Quality over quantity. I believe in giving student specific compliments, but children can tell when you are not being genuine, so I make sure to be thoughtful when giving them. I believe each student is an individual and everyone learns their own way, once I figure that out I cater my lesson plans to their needs and the goals we have agreed upon.
