I am a passionate, outgoing, realistic, and motivational instructor. I adore working with children and sharing my love for music and music history. I graduated from RI College in 2014 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Arts and Sciences focusing on Voice Performance. I have had opportunities to perform with the Opera Workshop of RI College, and some small opera groups and organizations in Massachusetts, New York, Connecticut, and Texas. I had the honor of performing for the Chaminade Club in Providence RI and the opportunity to perform at the Annual "Bach Fest" in Poughkeepsie NY. I have also had the pleasure of taking part in a tour with the RI College Chorus to Austria, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic.
EXPERIENCE
I started to teach privately in June 2012, teaching both voice and early piano. I teach students out of their homes, or a space of their choice. I have mostly worked out of their local schools or churches. I encourage and emphasize regular practice on a consistent schedule. I encourage hard work, but also fun when practicing, and during lessons to help maintain a student's growth and interest. I encourage my students to enjoy their instrument and encourage them to find music they wish to learn that interest them, as well as classical pieces. While learning an instrument is tough, it should be an enjoyable experience!
METHODS USED
For beginning students under the age of 12, I typically like to start with Singing Lessons for Little Singers and New Singing Games for Young Singers: Ten Original Singing Games by Donna Rhodenizer. Once they have progressed and picked up the fundamentals from these lessons I like to move on to Hal Leonard's Giant Book of Children's Vocal Solos. For ages 14 and up I like to focus on songs/styles my students are interested in. To help progress the voice we begin to do vocal exercises from Vaccai Practical Method of Italian Singing. And study music from Louise Lerch's The Teen's Musical Theater Collection, Hal Leonard Corp Best Broadway Songs Ever. Many of these books come with a CD to help students at home as well.
LESSON STYLE
The best part of teaching children is seeing their drive and passion grow with each lesson. Every child learns at their own pace, and each one has a unique voice and learning style. I try my best to be versatile and I like being open to new music and using new music styles that can help my students grow as musicians. I set realistic goals for my students, and want my students to look forward to their voice lessons. I also focus on making a safe space for my students to talk freely about their progress, their goals, and what they want to get out of their voice lessons. This way I can tailor my instruction to their needs.
